Hey friends!

I hope your week and weekend was a good one! I had a great one seeing family and friends, and went to some virtual events as well. Anyway, let’s boogie.

Something that interested me this week

This week I went to some fun events! I went to a meetup about role playing games (I admit I don’t know a ton about that space, so it was fun to learn from the speakers), and The Mux Informational (they are doing some interesting things with building real-time video), and Remix Conf. They were all virtual, but it was fun getting to learn some things that I don’t know as much about, and cheer on speakers.

I also did an interview on a Brazilian channel that came out this week as well (it’s in English but has Portuguese subtitles). Please feel free to check it out!

Sponsor

This week’s sponsor is Sourcegraph!

We surveyed 31 open source maintainers and project leads to understand what processes and tools make for a successful developer onboarding program – and so you don’t have to.

In this guide to optimizing developer onboarding, dig into the challenges open source projects and private companies face when onboarding new developers and see best practices you can adopt to improve developer experience, speed up time to first commit, and increase the overall satisfaction with your onboarding process. You’ll learn:

  • How companies and open source projects are handling developer onboarding differently
  • Why open source projects can serve as a model for effective remote onboarding
  • What the three pillars of a successful developer onboarding experience are

Interview question of the week

Last week, I had you find the shortest paths in a 2D matrix. Great job Karey, Will, Amine, Mo, Leyan, Ten, Ben, Les, Kelvin, and Giovanni!

This week’s question:
Write a function that determines if all the characters in a given string are unique. Can you do this without making any new variables? You choose if you want to include capitalization in your consideration for this one, as a fun challenge.

Example:

> allUnique('Cassidy')
> false

> allUnique('cat & dog')
> false

> allUnique('cat+dog')
> true
