D&F 2/6/22
Last week felt terrible in a lot of ways. For whatever reason, each day seemed to drag on, as the pandemic continued to weigh on my brain. Even with a new bike to be excited about, I felt unbelievably busy with beginning-of-quarter tasks, hiring, and other job stuff. I tried to ride a bit every day to get away, but I found myself running out of daylight.
In short, I’m beat.
Let’s clear the air with a bit of cat slayer:

This weekend I’m trying to reset a little and spend more time relaxing and going outside. I’ll probably take a vacation at some point soon too, as the winter holiday feels like it was month and not weeks ago. The bike I mentioned is beckoning me for a lot of tarmac and daytime riding, and I want to explore. Fortunately (or unfortunately) it doesn’t seem like things are changing, COVID-wise any time soon, so I’m not about to be inundated with plans that distract from cycling. Over on my blog, I wrote about the past year of really giving road-cycling a go after years of just fixies and commuting.
2020-now would’ve been so much tougher without cycling, therapy, Prozac, and my cat—each one with the capacity to bring me back up just a bit. If you’re reading this, I bet you have a short list of things that have kept you going since the world went sideways, and are thankful for your ability to access them. We’ve all discovered new hobbies, or rediscovered old ones; fallen in love, or realized we kind of hated the person we were living with. Unpacking the past few years will be a boon to the financial security of the world’s psychologists for sure.
Another new thing I did this week was get into cooking on an induction range instead of my uneven and inefficient electric stove. This helpful himbo video explains many of the benefits. At this point my stove/oven combo is largely for storage, as I cook everything in a rice cooker, Anova oven, or induction top. Ideally in my next apartment I can just save some counter space and either have just the induction hob, or upgrade to an induction stove all-together. And speaking of heating, I love this anarchist-designed heater for unhoused folks in the PNW. When the system so utterly fails people in a pursuit of profit, this kind of resistance is a delight.
These pants are cursed—a hate crime against the lactose intolerant. When I see cheese, I just imagine I’m “back in the pants again”.

- It’s really dry in the Bay Area this week so be sure to take care of your skin with a good routine:

Closing
I hope a few of those videos gave you a good chuckle. I’m off to ride up some big hills and then down again with a big smile on my face. Whether it’s sunny or cloudy where you are, get outside if you can and take a few deep breaths. I think we’ll get through this whole nightmare eventually, and until then at least we can watch unhinged content on the internet. Stay cozy, space cowgirls~
