Bird Mail 034
Hi,
This is Bird Mail, your only-on-Tuesdays newsletter with delightful things pulled from around the internet just for you. I am Bruce, the gatherer of all these links. I do my best to keep the news out of this newsletter because I think we all have enough news outlets to pick from already.
Lately, I feel like I am drowning in news. So much of it is critical to be aware of, but my goodness I am worn out on news. I think I hit a saturation point a few weeks ago and of late, I am burned out.
You may have noticed that I missed a few Bird Mails over the past few weeks. I am sorry. I’ve been worn out and stir crazy and a bit overwhelmed. I imagine a lot of us are feeling that way. I haven’t figured out what to do about all of it yet, but in my funk I did not have the energy to work on Bird Mail. My output didn’t feel like it was up to snuff. I am not sure I’m back, but at least this week, there is a Bird Mail. It’s a short one, but it’s a Bird Mail.
Time has always fascinated me (though lately time has been crawling by). As a kid I loved clocks—save the grandfather clock on the first floor of my grandparents house, as a light sleeper it kept me awake all. night.—and most of all watches. My First Watch from Hodinkee is also my first watch. I remember the joy of getting an Indiglo watch and using the glow to find my flashlight under my bed so I could read under the covers. Since then I’ve had other Timex watches, a Swatch made entirely by robots, and my current daily Apple Watch, but there was something so special about going to the store and picking out my Indiglo watch and wearing it until it broke.
Continuing the theme of relics from my past, I came across these incredible papercraft models of old computers. The level of detail is amazing, with screens that you can switch out, peripherals, and best of all, templates you can download and build yourself! I was thrilled to find the computer that began my fascination with technology among the models. Pair that with Present and Correct's typology of LEGO computers. I remember being a kid and getting so excited each time I started in on a set that included a new computer. Looking at this image, I see six or seven computers that I recall having, but several I have never seen before, which leaves me wondering what sets they came from.
I keep COVID out of Bird Mail as much as possible but these quarantine makeover Barbies were too funny not to share.
I hope you all can get some rest during this holiday week. As always, if Bird Mail is just too much in your inbox, you can always unsubscribe at any time.
Take care out there,
Bruce
