Bird Mail: 010
Holy 10th issue Batman!
I'm trying something a little different with this week's Bird Mail. I finished it today which is two days late so I'm sending it right now. I felt like I had writer's block (which probably isn't real) the few days leading up to when it was scheduled to go out. I read lots of interesting things, but the words just weren't coming. It's a few days late, but you all still get a Bird Mail this week. If you want more or less Bird Mail in your inbox, reply and let me know!

The A/C in my car died about 90 miles from home a few weeks ago. Even with the windows down, it was a very hot ride back to Austin. After dealing with service departments and mechanics, I was left wishing I could call up Click and Clack so they could set me straight. I don’t remember the first time I heard Car Talk as a kid but the Puzzlers, punny staff names, and general geekery—all in a Massachusetts accent that sounded very foreign to my Texan ears—captured my attention. There hasn’t been a new episode since 2012, but the show still plays every week. Car Talk is simply taking a while to say goodbye.

As a kid I would buy an entire year of old National Geographic for a few dollars at the Friends of the Library. I read the stories that interested me, but I was really in it for the maps inside. One of my favorites is the 1983 Journey into the Universe, that traced Earth’s location into the known universe at the time. It filled me wonder to know that I was a speck on the blue dot in the corner among all that space on the map. I loved trying to track where Earth was in the Milky Way, and well beyond. Lately, I’ve been looking at this photo by Maroun Habib, who went to opposite ends of the Earth to capture the complete galactic plane, with the same sense of awe.

Sometimes nice things get donated to Goodwill. You can bid on them or buy them. Not everything is inexpensive. Make sure you have some free time before you open this link or you will get sucked in and lose 30 minutes.

My high school assemblies were never this cool.

Something worth believing in:
Writing things down isn’t just about keeping a record; it’s about a deeper level of clarity that the finer articulation releases.
