Bird Mail: 007
-
I visited Boston for the first time earlier in July and though it was a short trip, the parts of the city I saw have me looking forward to my return. Cayla and I made a Friday night stop at the Institute of Contemporary Art to see an exhibition on Maximalism but as we wound our way through the halls we rounded a corner into a dark room full of projectors and speakers. We’d stumbled into the last 20 or so minutes of Ragnar Kjartansson’s The Visitors. Nine musicians in different rooms of a manor house (and their less musically talented family) all sing the same line Once again, I fall into, my feminine ways on repeat for nearly an hour—I have included a tiny snippet here and the full version is online, but this is really meant to be experienced in person. While fifty-two minutes of the same line might sound boring it is haunting and loving and moving and I saw people tear up as the emotion and sound poured out of all the speakers and vibrated deep within your chest. It’s been about two weeks since I walked into The Visitors and I’ve not been able to get it out of my head. I’m thinking about making another trip to Houston just to see it again.

Soon your morning bean juice might be beanless.

As the news about climate change gets seemingly more grim each week, I’ve been thinking about my impact on the planet and trying to make little changes. I added a reusable straw and plastic-wear to my daily carry bag, and I have thought more about where my clothes come from and how long they will last. Some of that comes in the form of buying clothes from companies like Taylor Stitch that not only make versatile, hard-wearing basics, but also have a repair shop and restitch program repairing and reselling old clothes that customers send back for credit, but it also comes in the form of second-hand shopping. Knowing what brands to look for is one thing, but knowing how to identify well-made clothes, whether new or used, makes it a lot easier to build a wardrobe that will last. This two part article on assessing garments has been helpful to me.

It is rather serendipitous that just in time for Bird Mail issue 007, a new 007 has been announced. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing just how much ass she kicks in the next film.
I would love to hear from you if you enjoyed any of these links, or if you have something you think I should add to my collection, feel free to reply to this email!
