UAT, PiAware 8.2, and more
Happy Friday, everybody! ✈️
I hope you are all busy tracking the flight traffic over your heads. With only one day to go in 2023, it's time to get the first balena-ads-b newsletter of the year out the door before it's too late. And with version 1.2.0 of balena-ads-b released earlier today, the timing should be good.
Quite a bit has happened since the last time (in the middle of 2021!), so let's go through the details, section by section.
Eager to update to version 1.2.0? You'll find the instructions further below in this newsletter.
UAT Support (US only)
First mentioned as an upcoming feature in the previous newsletter edition last year, UAT tracking is finally publicly available. It's been in the works for almost two years, and implementing the functionality has been challenging as I live in Norway, where UAT is unavailable. But thanks to our friends schubydoo, JPGMC, and alanb128, the UAT implementation has been beta tested and confirmed to be working.
So if you are living in the United States and are ready to give UAT a go, you can read more about the details on how to get up and running in our documentation.
PiAware 8.2
The guys over at FlightAware are busy working on PiAware updates, and they released version 8.2 a few weeks ago. It has been included in the new balena-ads-b release v1.2.0, too.
Supported flight tracking services
If it's a while since you updated your balena-ads-b installation, there might be more supported flight tracking services waiting for you. The following services are now implemented:
After you upgrade, configure the services you don't currently feed to.
More supported hardware
Our list of supported devices is growing, and the latest addition is the Orange Pi Zero. Thanks to eagleDiego for verifying and for sharing the good news with us. 👏🏻 If you successfully run balena-ads-b on a device not listed as supported, please let us know. It's always a thrill to add more hardware to the docs.
Documentation overhaul
Our documentation has got a facelift, too. If you want to dive into more advanced topics such as customising your antenna gain or disabling specific services, we got you covered. You can head over to the ReadMe to learn the details.
How to update?
Updating is easy. If you installed balena-ads-b using the blue Deploy with balena-button, you can click it again and overwrite your current application. All settings will be preserved. As a subscriber of this newsletter, you can even do it directly from here:
If you used the balena push
method, pull the changes from the master branch and push the update to your application with the balena CLI. For complete instructions, have a look at the ReadMe.
