Looking back and moving forward

www.antonsten.com

Hello,

So, after 13 months of working with IKEA to build awesome things I’m proud of, it’s time to move on to the next adventure. This, of course, has me not only excitedly looking forward to working with SuperFriendly in Boston starting this week, but looking back at the things I’ve done.

Did you know I got a lot of my start by working in the advertising industry? I honed my skills on contextual marketing campaigns that appealed to general audiences and sold products and services like crazy. We don’t see those types of campaigns and, to me, that’s pretty disappointing. I wrote out my thoughts on this because I believe that there is not only still a place for this type of marketing, but also because I believe behavioral campaigns like we see on Facebook and Google violate our privacy. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Until next time -

Favorite quote:

If you’ve read my book, Ruined by Design, you’re familiar with the story of James Liang. He was the Volkswagen engineer who designed that software that lied about Volkswagen emissions. He was convicted of fraud for knowingly designing software that deceived people. He’s currently serving a 40-month sentence for that. And yes, Liang told the judge the orders came from management. We now have a precedent for deceptive design sending people to jail.
