🧶 ICYMI #6: July 26, 2019

🧶 ICYMI

Hello hello!

Apparently, writing a newsletter is a really good way to make you super aware of how quickly time is passing 😶.

✏️ Writes

  • Lindsey Kopacz wrote a great piece on accessibility lessons learned when starting a podcast. (Very relevant for me!)
  • Doc Parsons wrote a piece for event software company Tito, "Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable" about working on diversity & inclusion at their company.
  • Brent Jackson and John Otander both wrote interesting pieces on the thinking behind theme styling. "Themeability" describes the evolution in thinking toward the development of the Theme UI library, and "Styling Themes" is essentially a comprehensive survey of CSS innovations over the last 10 years.
  • LekoArts wrote a great piece on using Theme UI in a Gatsby theme.

🔨 Projects

  • Louan Bengmah created the delightful Emoji Mashup Bot, which tries to create new emojis out of two random emojis.
  • Tatiana Mac is building Self-Defined, a modern dictionary about us. (She also guested on the #causeascene podcast this week).
  • Dawn Labs built Carbon, which lets you share beautiful images of your source code. Now I know where these come from!

💬 Twitter

  • 🧵 @MaryRobinette responding to the notion that historically, women couldn't go to space because we lacked the technology for them to pee in space.
  • 🐦 @ericwbailey: accessible markup is a continuum of support, and not a binary state.
  • 🐦 @laurenbaldoart on how he applies color theory to his paintings and illustrations.

🎧 Podcasts

  • Caroline Criado-Perez guested on 99% Invisible to talk about her book, "Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men". (Which is now in my reading queue).
  • Aaron Cannon guested on React Podcast: "Get access with Aaron Cannon".
  • Pariss Athena guested on the Egghead podcast on "Gaining Freedom and Helping Others Find Success".

🗣 Shout-outs

  • The dev.to community published their first book, "Your First Year in Code". It looks awesome (and I gifted a copy to my mentee!)
  • Kelly Vaughn's Taproom Agency is now a ShopifyPlus solutions partner.
  • Egghead launched a swag store. (And it's forked from the Gatsby swag store!)

🦄 Random

  • This NPR interview with RBG -- "I am very much alive."
  • PBS has a new series called "Ancient Skies" that's on my to-watch list.
  • Serena Williams vs mere mortals. Makes me smile every time.

📚 Currently reading...

  • Weapons of Math Destruction by Cathy O'Neil.

🌵 Personal

  • We released the second episode of Fullstack Health! In this episode, we chat with Info Steph about anxiety.
  • I had a custom portrait done! I love supporting artists, and Matt Peet does really fun work.
  • I published my very first Egghead lesson!
  • I started swimming again! Picked up Zero to 1650 (building up to a swimmer's mile). Today is workout three of week 1.

Have a lovely weekend! 💜,

Amberley
