🧶 ICYMI #3: July 5, 2019

🧶 ICYMI

Hello hello!

Hope y'all had a great week! Here are some things that caught my eye.

✏️ Writes

  • Matt Ström wrote about the prioritization of "delight" in product design, in "Delight Comes Last".
  • Anna Rankin wrote "How Art School Prepared Me for Programming".
  • Anil Dash wrote "12 Things Everyone Should Understand About Tech". (Note: Published on April 7, 2018, but new to me).

🔨 Projects

  • John Otander and @mrmrs_ are building a new generative design tool, Components AI.
  • The Affect project published the "Disabled and Here" free stock photo collection, a "disability-led effort to provide free and inclusive stock photos."
  • I don't even know how to describe this but it's excellent. Monica Dinculescu created ✨ the brussels sprouts concerto in A minor ✨.

🧵 Threads

  • Jessica Rose shared a helpful thread of "not exceptionally technical tech tips" like forcing access to the login page for a public WiFi.
  • Imani Barbarin started a hashtag, #DisabledCompliments, where people shared ableist "compliments" they've received.
  • Rob Dodson shares that oftentimes folks put tabindex="0" on headings because they think they're important, but it's unlikely you really need to do this.

🎤 Talks

  • Jarrod Overson gave a talk at JSNation 2019, "Analysis of an exploited npm package".
  • Jonny Sun gave a talk at TED2019, "You Are Not Alone in Your Loneliness".

🎧 Podcasts

  • Reply All put out an episode about the dark patterns (UI, SEO, marketing, etc) around the super-profitable tax software, TurboTax.
  • Nic Steenhout and Christopher Schmitt guested on Shop Talk to talk about web accessibility.
  • Aaron Gustafson guested on Fullstack Radio to talk about authoring semantic HTML in the context of web applications.

🗣 Shout-outs

  • Tatiana Mac and Henry Desroches launched a collaboration called "The Diff", a livestream about finding, experimenting, and celebrating the many ways to make the web wonderful.
  • Katie Fujihara gave her first session/conference talk to a standing-room only audience!
  • Ladybug Podcast released their first official episode!

🦄 Random

  • @salvucciodamico put Marianne Williamson's 2020 Dem Debate "love speech" to Sailor Moon transformation music and it is everything.
  • @andyjpizza illustrated these really charming "Invisible Things".
  • Marcy Sutton shared a video of a dog stealing a cabbage to brighten my day and now it's now bookmarked for future smiles.

🌵 Personal

  • Next week, Kurt Kemple and I are launching a new project that we're ⚡️ VERY EXCITED ⚡️ about. Can't wait 🤗.
  • So much Gatsby news!! On Wednesday, we announced that Gatsby themes are stable, released a case study on using themes for distributed docs, wrote about component shadowing patterns, launched the Theme Jam contest, released a whole new course on Egghead for authoring themes and launched updated docs for themes. WHEW.
  • It's worth saying one more time on its own -- I'm super excited about the Theme Jam contest! Check out details on the contest and this starter repo for building your own theme!

Hope y'all have a lovely weekend! 💜,

Amberley
