Blast Off--Aimée's Writing Shenanigans
Welcome to the official launch of my first-ever newsletter!
I'm nervous and excited to have you here. Honestly, I don't really know what I'm doing, but I'm pretty good at figuring this stuff out as I do it, so I'm confident these will become more informative and entertaining at a fairly rapid pace.
Thank you for your patience as I get my feet wet.
For now, I'd like to share two articles and one poem with you. The first article is to inspire and assist you with your creative writing practice. The second article is a personal essay about my experience with cannabis and medical marijuana. The poem is for women to reclaim our magic and includes a beautiful 1-minute video at the end of a moonflower slowly opening.
Let's dive in!
This is an instructional piece on how to write personal essays/creative nonfiction.
Freewrite some ideas. Pick a song that triggers memories. Pick a scent that means something to you. Pick a person who brings up deep emotions or mixed emotions or both. Think about a place you traveled to and if it changed you. What were you like when you were 10 years old? What are you like today? If money wasn’t an obstacle, what would you be doing right now? Where would you live? Have you ever had to make a decision that involved questionable ethics? What’s one of the most disturbing things you’ve ever seen? One of the most beautiful? What sounds irritates you so much you want to scream? What sound makes you pause and smile? Do you like the feel of sunlight on your hair or head or shoulders? Do you like the sounds of crickets or frogs singing?

I tried smoking marijuana for the first time when I was in college in the late 1990s. I stopped smoking in 2006. In the state where I live, medical marijuana was legalized a few years ago. I recently obtained my medical marijuana. I believe cannabis is medicinal and will be exploring this topic more. This is my inaugural artile about the topic.
"When I became a mom, I decided good moms don’t smoke pot. Judgy. I know. I knew it’d come up eventually, but I was determined to say something like, “Yes, I smoked weed in college, but haven’t had any since before you were born.” I assumed this discussion would occur when they were teenagers.
