006 - The Power of Mindshifts To Making You a Happier You
Mindshifts, are about changing your thought process so that you can be happier or focus on the positives. I've been a big fan of mindshifts for a while. Another example that happens to be related to this topic is Hype Docs. People often focus on the negatives - mistakes we made or things we failed at. The mindshift Hype Docs allows is to instead continuously focus and celebrate your achievements. By constantly celebrating your achievements you get reminded of your greatness and value, and you begin growing resilliency against imposter syndrome.
I've found myself having conversations about mindshifts in various capacities this week. The most common is about how we need to shift how we think about the current COVID-19 "WFH" order - we're not "working from home" as if everything is fine and dandy. Quite the opposite. We're in the middle of a pandemic, trying to work while at home.
What's the difference between these two statements? Well, the first (working from home) implies things are business as usual
, and instead of going to the office you're simply working like you normally would while at home. This grossly misrepresents the struggles many people, especially mothers, are facing right now.
Instead, the healthier way to think about working during a pandemic is the second statement: "We're in the middle of a pandemic, trying to work while at home". Here we acknowledge that things aren't normal. That priorities have likely shifted, and that we're now trying to achieve tasks previously done in a different setting form our homes instead.
It's dangerous to imply things are "business as usual" when they aren't because it results in people trying to maintain the same (or more) workload, while also ensuring child education continues, maintaining a house that's getting more foottraffic than normal and balancing relationships 24/7 in high stress environments. Things aren't business as usual, and instead of holding ourselves up to this unsustainable goals and beating ourselves up if we're unable to maintain them, we should instead focus on that mindshift to swap our thinking into a more positive sense. We allow ourselves to adjust our goals appropriately, don't beat ourselves up if we're achieving less work than before, and give ourselves the ability to succeed at both career and personal life when it's currently difficult to do so.
COVID has pushed us all into new and different challenges, it only makes sense that our minds and thought processes should also change.
