Month 13 Highlights
Well folks, another month has passed, and it has been a busy one. I have to admit I’m really struggling to keep up (both with Toby and my aspirational posting schedule). So it’s just the highlights this time around and we’ll see how it goes for Month 14!

First up in my notes: Toby started to show us her mischievous streak this month. She understands that I don’t want her to unspool the toilet paper. She knows the cats’ water fountain is not for play. And she is definitely aware of our policy regarding food on the floor. But she looks over her shoulder with a grin and crosses all those boundaries anyway. It’s cute, for now.
While she isn’t walking independently yet, she has begun to take her first steps! Her best record is two individual sets of six little unassisted steps. But she’s gotten much more proficient at managing her push carts, and is very stable on her feet. It’s going to happen any day now, but I think she’s probably getting tired of me saying “let’s practice walking.” It’s still easier to crawl or be carried.
One of her favorite new activities is climbing. We have to be careful with her around the couch, since she only needs a couple extra inches under her feet to boost herself up onto the next level. We’ve transitioned her Baby Bjorn bouncer into a toddler chair and also need to teach her that we don’t stand in chairs. This development has unlocked a lot of stuff at playgrounds, so there’s a fun new outing in our playbook as well.
Toby made the transition to whole milk really easily; we finished off her last container of formula a week after she turned one and haven’t had any issues with it. She’s also doing better at drinking out of cups instead of bottles, but we haven’t fully weaned her off them. We’re down to two bottles a day, and I’m looking to eliminate those in the next couple weeks.
Finally, she’s got a much better appetite for solid food, and we’ve started sharing a lot more with her off our own plates. She’s a good eater. It makes me really happy to see her enjoying the homemade puree pouches I whip up. She surprises me by being willing to try basically everything we put on her tray (kimchi!?) but we do have to make sure she’s tucking in on her veggies. Also noteworthy here: she’s very good at signing for “more.” (Thank you to friend-of-the-publication Bovard for nudging us on that!)
