Books That Burn - Early October Reviews (2021)

Greetings

Welcome to the Books That Burn Fortnightly Roundup! Releasing every two weeks (one week early for Patrons). Remember to head to Transcripts That Burn for all available transcripts of the podcast.

This was a very strange several weeks, I was given three days notice that I was actually going to get a planned and previously delayed surgery. It went well and I'm recovering, but apparently I do most of my reading while lying on my side and I can't quite do that right now.

I'm still mostly paused in my read of THE WITCH KING by H.E. Edgmon. I like it, but it also makes me very dysphoric (due to accuracy) so I'm taking it slow.

I had a few DNFs, I had to put down STAR EATER (2021) by Kerstin Hall pretty early on because while I was ready to read about cannibal nuns in a fantasy setting, dread of pregnancy as a major plot element is a no-go for me, so I stopped.

I'm currently in the middle of four books, an ARC of HOW WE FALL APART (2021) by Katie Zhao, DEATHLESS DIVIDE (2020) by Justina Ireland (sequel to DREAD NATION which I also re-read), an ARC of THE ALL-CONSUMING WORLD by Cassandra Khaw, and re-reading NOT YOUR SIDEKICK by C.B. Lee.

I finished THE POETIC EDDA (2019 / very old) translated by Carolyne Larrington. The EDDA didn't get a standard review because it's a translation of poetry from Norse mythology, but I'd been meaning to read it and finally got around to it.

Books That Burn - Late June Reviews (2021)

Welcome to the Books That Burn Fortnightly Roundup! Releasing every two weeks (one week early for Patrons). Remember to head to Transcripts That Burn for all available transcripts of the podcast.

Upcoming events: The monthly livestream is on the last Saturday of every month, which means this month it's on July 31st at 6PM Pacific / 8PM Central / 9PM Eastern. You can watch it on Twitch or Youtube. We'll play games with friends and guests, and answer your questions.

I'm currently in the middle of three books, THE NEVER TILTING WORLD (2020) by Rin Chupeco , A RIVER OF ROYAL BLOOD (2019) by Amanda Joy, and THE POETIC EDDA (2019 / very old) translated by Carolyne Larrington. The EDDA won't get a standard review because it's a translation of poetry from Norse mythology, but you can look for reviews of the other two in the next edition of the Fortnightly Roundup.

I had a few books I didn't finish. I had forgotten how much casual sexism is in the framing device of THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING (1939) by T.H. White, and put it down a few chapters in. From now on I'll probably read more modern retellings of Arthurian tales, though I do remember loving this particular one as a kid. I also attempted a middle-grade fantasy, PAOLA SANTIAGO AND THE RIVER OF TEARS (2020) by Tehlor Kay Mejia. I've read her young-adult fantasy previously and liked it, so it might just be that this one was too young for me. Finally, I accepted that as much as I love Malinda Lo's fantasy work, I just couldn't follow her into the sapphic historical young adult novel that is LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB (2021). I need to accept that I have a 50% DNF rate for non-magical, non-thriller YA, and just stop trying to read them for a while.

The first half of June has been an interesting one for our book reviews. First there's an adult fantasy novella, STONE AND STEEL by Eboni Dunbar. I like the beginning but the ending felt a bit rushed and overall I felt pretty neutral about it. If there's ever a novel-length version I'd be interested in reading it, I think the story needed more room for the amount of detail it was trying to fit in. I took a stab at reading a YA contemporary book with HARLEY IN THE SKY by Akemi Dawn Bowman, but my brain noped out. It's probably a great book, just not for me.

Next was a great YA contemporary fantasy retelling of Peter Pan, LOST IN THE NEVER WOODS by Aiden Thomas. It's not my favorite Peter Pan retelling (that spot currently belongs to PETER DARLING by Austin Chant), but it's great YA and I can tell I would have loved it even more when I was still a teenager.
