Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - September 23, 2020
Hello everybody,
I am staying in quite a bit - going out only for groceries and food, sometimes a picnic brunch at Point Vicente and attending as many Zoom meetings as I can where I can take in and admire what other people are doing (see the yellow entries in the calendar). A statement that resonated with me came from a Puget Sound Book Arts member, Mari Eckstein Gower, who wrote/spoke about getting nourishment from your window. Every week when the sanitation engineer comes to collect the trash on Tuesdays I know that Oliver but we all call him Ollie, a 2-year old, will be outside waiting with his mom or dad for his favorite person driving a big green truck. The driver honks his horn and raises the arm a bunch of times much to the delight of Ollie. There is a lot of waving between the 2 of them as he drives away. What is it about little boys and big trucks? It just tickles me to watch them from my window and it warms my heart. It is a nice tick in time where we make sure to get the trash out and enjoy Ollie interacting with one of his favorite people. Ollie calls Bill "Good neighbor Bill" and loves it when Bill drives by in the red car.
Would you take the BARN survey in the " Bits & bobs about paper ..." section? The more we share the more we have (thank you Margaret B). Oh, yes! I have changed the names of some of the sections below. An online class about photographing your art work is coming up Oct 1 & 2. There is also mention of mini photography studios with videos in the Bits and bobs section. There is another "For Instructors: Getting Started with Online Classes" online class on Oct 6.
Hope you are staying safe and well - Jade

====================About the calendar
Link to the calendar: https://teamup.com/ksd9e12a80c3878ba5 (If the link is not working copy and paste it to your browser)
There is no difference between Calendar 1 (blue entries) and 2 (red entries), just a way to visually separate in-person workshops; orange and light teal (also visual separation) entries are online workshops; light green ones are the latest workshops found since the last email update; purple entries are for festivals or conferences; yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums
You can do a search (magnifying glass search button in upper right of screen) by state, town, instructor name, time zone, etc. If it is the calendar you can search on it. If one class is sold out search for a keyword to see if another is available, for example, "masu"
Monthly view is best viewed using a larger monitor with desktop/laptop. To change view look for Scheduler, Day, ... Month ... Agenda, List in upper right corner of screen and click on appropriate view
If using cell, mobile or smart phone change view to List, Day or Agenda view using button with the down arrow in upper right corner of screen
Agenda (list view from current day going forward) or List (list view for current week/month going forward)

OK - not paper but you have to admire the intricate details of these leaf-cut works - he goes by lito_leafart on Instagram. I love #15 no flash perfectly captures of the cats tapetum lucidum

Are you like me and love to go through a hardware store looking for items to use in your art? I love paint chips - check out this Sherwin Williams paint chip commercial - love the swirl of colors and close-up details! . Here are more of these commercials on Sherwin Williams website.

Have you noticed that it may actually be less expensive to get a new inkjet printer rather than get replacement ink catridges? Maybe you should start thinking about getting a laser printer if you don’t print very often. Here are the 5 best laser printers under $200
How to make a Turkish map fold book - measurements are in the comments. If you wish to make a star book, create 2 more "signatures" and a 10-section accordion. How to make a Hungarian map fold book - measurements are in the comments. If you don't want it to flop around too much you could glue cardstock between each signature.
Then Gina Pisello had this ingenious idea of nesting the Hungarian map fold inside the Turkish map fold making it even more sculptural and amazing. Looking at the videos and pictures reminded me of a book I made (on my fropbox account) inspired by Gina for a paper and book arts teacher who was retiring. Each page had a map of where she taught on one side and a word describing how I felt when I was attending her classes.
Do you take pictures of your work? I found this through Kickstarter - a mini photography studio called Foldio1 [they do come in 3 sizes now] from http://orangemonkie.com/about/ that collapses almost flat - that I have been using since 2014 and have now run across another tabletop collapsible studio called ShotBox (video here). You can check out the Foldio2 here. They seem comparable in price if you purchase directly from the companies. Don't forget there is an online workshop about taking pictures of your work on Oct 1 & 2.
Thought provoking packaging experience – The X-Perience Kit - I could see how some of these structures could used to house or make books!
