Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - April 24, 2023
Hello everyone,
-
Wells College Book Arts Summer Institute 2023 registration is now open
-
I have added the ability for you to jump to your favorite sections without having to go through the entire newsletter - the caveat is you will need to read the newsletter online (click on link in signature block below) and not in your email - do let me know about any broken jump links. I have been having issues saving the new bits and so there is a chance they may not be working. Email to that webmaster has been written.
-
I am looking forward to receiving my StartNext crowd funded BuchBauKasten book layout/format cards at the end of the year that will help one figure out what books to make (grateful for Google translate as I do not read or write German) - YouTube short that talks about this - now if I only could figure out where to get Barb Tentenbaum and Julie Chen's ideation card stack the set would be complete (do you know anyone who may have a set for sale?)
Me ke aloha nui - Jade

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art’s (BIMA) - Artist's Books Unshelved: full play list here
John Neal Books - upcoming online calligraphy classes
CBA NY presents an artist talk with Susan Joy Share - Stretch, Stack, Stand- tracing the development of her dynamic bookworks
Out of the Box Bookbinding has launched a new tutorial - wire edge binding by Daniel Kelm - order your copy here - video of launch
This showed up in my YouTube recommended feed - New Multi Cinch by We R Makers - looks like a cool alternative to sewing and no-sew bookbinding options
Ok - this may seem simple for tying a quick bow but this kinda blew my mind a little - also a bow to keep your shoelaces from coming undone - I learned how to do this double loop one but without the initial surgeons knot and it still works - and here is yet another way - an Ian secure knot
Paper alchemist, Bel Mills, on the magic of making books by hand - all this paper and color makes me happy
Ali Manning of VintagePage Designs has some paper tips
This was from 2019 but, gosh, still tremendously enjoyable to view these artist books from the Cary Collection at the library of Rochester Institute of Technology
I love that the Thimble Gallery is a micro art gallery in a refurbished dollhouse. It is a real art gallery, but on a tiny 1:24 scale - submit your proposal today! (I'm looking at my Zhen Xian Bao (ZXB)(Chinese Thread Book) classmate who created a tremendously tiny and adorable 3"x 1.5" x 0.75" ZXB which I would be happy to tuck into my tiny belt loop purse which is 6" x 4" x 1.25")
Continuing with my slight obsession with the masu (any square box) or tato (envelope) - stretch your origami muscles a little by practicing this tato - you can stop once you get the square tato (variation to a twist fold/box) or continue pull out paper to make the octagon box
I wish I had found this sooner - a playlist of everything tato (envelopes) - and always in the midst of collecting ideas that are interesting and unusual
I fold paper and am constantly learning new things so always good for me to go back to basics - here are some basic origami folds, bases, and terminology
Going back through my "stash" of collected information I came across this popup/fun fold card - it still piqued my curiosity and delighted (with an eye to see if could be a page in a book - love dimension and interactivity)
More artists books explorations from Eleonora Cumer from my stash - lots of delightful color
Cathryn Miller of Byopia press with her fabric meander book with pockets but I bet this could also translate to paper with experiments on how to hinge it
Getting in your steps and making art - especially love his triangular fractals
Flower top masu tutorial by Joan Sallas folded by Paula Krieg - love this way to fold the flower top box - a smoother appearance in the end
I am agog that you can weave mineral, metal and shell into Japanese obi (kimono belt)
Used a variation of this band closure (shh! don't tell anyone that I glued the hasp in the wrong place and covered up the mistake with more cardstock) for my final project for the latest Zhen Xian Bao (Chinese Thread Book) workshop with Paula Krieg and Susan Share
8 stories to celebrate [World Book Day] - Apr 23, 2023 [World Book Day]: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/world-book-day-2023/
Submissions in a video for World Book Night - read about the submissions in downloadable catalog
An oldie but goody (they mention VCRs! I remember taping the Carol Duvall Show in the early 2000s - so thrilled that we were no longer tied down to the schedules of our favorite shows) - a teeny, tiny blizzard book with an equally tiny and ingenious cover by Hedi Kyle, made out of 1 sheet of letter or A4 sized paper, folded by Karen Thomas
Before I found out about Hedi Kyle the person who provided me with paper inspirations was Karen Thomas (well she still does) here folding a Turkish map fold card and book, one sheet folded books (some overlap with previous video), an origami clutch, and a pencil cup
Craft in America - Process episode - Julie Chen
Quick no-sew envelope book starting at 21:12 or so - perhaps good for travel?
Would you like fries with that? Cool origami table! I would pay extra for that but wonder if you will always need a pole for the transformation?
I have been slightly obsessed with this book (and saving up for it, maybe) ever since I saw in the gift store for MCBA?? Here is the giant version of Skye Tofoya's book
Can this pouf ottoman be done with paper - maybe lokta circles hinged with scraps of paper - interesting ornament
Kaci Smith weaves colorful patterns from miniature looms - I will never be able to look at wishbones and branches the same way again
I know it is website algorithms but still amazing to me (like how a 747 or A380 plane can lift off the ground even though I know the physics behind it) that videos or Instagram posts show up with all things masu (square box) or tato (envelopes) - my latest obsession from my recent Zhen Xian Bao (Chinese Thread Book) workshop - you can stop once you get the square tato (variation to a twist fold/box) or continue pull out paper to make the octagon box
Wow! How do they do this? Beyond paper cutting with imagined images of life below the ocean from another chapter of life on earth! Just amazing fine work!
The thought of building a tiny home has crossed my mind. If parked in my tiny backyard it would probably end up being my studio or she shed - all things tiny homes here with builders, locations, communities, designs, FAQs, floor plans, etc. - a YouTube short for you to enjoy
Curated by the Sea, Santa Cruz, CA - link to artwork in link as well - About Printmaking on view from now until May 27, 2023
Stacked folio binding tutorial - great book to make whether or not you have content that may go across the page - very thorough with all the best practices

I thought I would mention how crazy it has been in the last 3 months. Let's just say I probably bit off more than I could chew and funnily enough there was a root canal involved in early January! I am hoping to take a breath at the end of June. Instead I wanted to chat about a beautiful walk we took at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center or what I call the whale watching center. It is a wonderful place to be with a few miles of trails by the ocean, a museum, docent led walks, and folks counting whales and dolphins during the migration season surrounded by California native plants. The drive there was glorious as we drove through the last bits of the superbloom happening all over CA (that could be seen from space). Bill wondered what cool and amazing thing we would see this time. The last time we were there we saw a rescue training exercise with a coast guard helicopter with an LAPD helicopter taking a look-see (only time I could use "rotor wash" in conversation - not exactly every day conversation material). I remarked that it was not possible that something interesting happens every time we go there, no one could possibly be that lucky. Needless to say I was wrong! We met a 9-year old West African Sulcata tortoise named Nomad. When I saw her I greeted her with, "I was not expecting to see you here today but I am absolutely delighted!" She immediately turned to me almost bowling me over and after asking for permission scratched the top of her head. However she was bound and determined to make the fence line that kept you from plunging over the cliff and sticking her head under it (luckily that was all that could fit). Herding her with the bright green reusable shopping bag was not working and eventually she had to be bribed with a piece of Romaine lettuce. It was very satisfying to hear her crunch through the rib - a very Nat Geo moment right in front of me. I also spied a man with SKU symbol tattooed on the back of his neck. I had to ask if it scanned to anything and would he be returnable? Luckily he had a great sense of humor and mentioned that when scanned at airports, he gets stopped because of the chaos that ensues with flight information blinking in and out, TSA scanners malfunctioning, etc. He was just kidding, of course, just a story he tells people and they seem to believe him. It was a good day!
If you remember I mentioned that there was one more snow story (see March newsletter) that dates back to before I was born and is still very much a part of me today. If you'd like to read about it click on this link to print a copy of the PDF file that was my contribution to a project I recently participated in. It was educational, enlightening, and at times, gut wrenching & soul searching. I am so grateful to have been a part of this project that was amazingly coordinated and thoughtfully organized by a dear friend. Video or instructions on how to make the zine from one sheet of paper. The lesson learned here is to only place one QR code per page. The QR codes allowed me to "extend" the information in the zine. If you are having issues with the QR codes the links were to the Encyclopedia Britannica entries about Malaysia and what is a Peranakan, Wikipedia entry about my eponym (leaving it as a reveal when you print and fold the zine) and the last one is to the newsletter.
See you next month.
