Book & Paper Arts Calendar Updates - February 22, 2021
Hello everybody,
FOBA news - they are going virtual - July 15 - 19, 2021. Save that date & gather online for the conference!
I have an email in my draft folder where I keep a number of opening paragraphs for those times when I feel less than inspired or have moved them here because they did not seem to "fit" (like when I whine about missing Hawaii, how it felt to be at a rocket launch, having a color resonates with you, etc.) when I ran across one where I wanted to talk about internet security for your PC/laptop and phone. I am still wavering about whether I should talk about it as it is a pretty huge subject. I do understand that this may require additional steps to keep your information and laptop safe but the spammers/ransomware attackers are counting on it being easier for you to click on a link to get what they want.
At a minimum however:
(1) Install anti-virus and real-time monitoring software on your laptop and phone (currently not as many smartphone viruses but as we transition from laptop/PC to phone for everything it would be good to have that additional layer of security)
(2) Never click on a link in a financially related email no matter how official it looks. Always go directly to your financial website (paypal, your bank, amazon, etsy, ups, fedex, usps, etc.) to see if it is trying to contact you. To help your financial institution combat these spammers forward that email to that financial institution's spammer/spoof email. Google "financial institution name" spam email, for example, "paypal spam email". Otherwise just delete it! If you can don't even open it - some email platforms may have read receipts again letting them know you are there
(3) never unsubscribe from a newsletter you never signed up/don't remember signing up for - that basically tells them that you are there and they can and will sell your information to others. Mark as spam then delete. Go to your spam folder every week to check for valid emails that may have accidentally ended up there and mark as not spam and also add their contact information to your email's address book to prevent them from being placed in the spam folder. Read more on what to do
(4) block and delete texts from numbers you do not recognize - do not click on any links - do not call them back (see 1 above)
Feel free to let me know if you would like more information and what I do to keep my laptop and my information safe.
Hope you are staying safe, sane, healthy and creative!
Me ke aloha nui- Jade

The time listed as you mouse over each entry or at the top of the entry when opened will be Pacific Time with the roiginal & other times listed in the Description area
There is no difference between Calendar 1 (blue entries) and 2 (red entries), just a way to visually separate in-person workshops; orange and light teal (also visual separation) entries are online workshops; light green ones are the latest workshops found since the last email update; purple entries are for festivals or conferences; yellow are public online meetings from various book arts guilds and museums
You can do a search (magnifying glass search button in upper right of screen) by state, town, instructor name, time zone, etc. If it is the calendar you can search on it. If one class is sold out search for a keyword to see if another is available, for example, "masu" or "Sheehy". Do use the organizations workshop calendar to see what else is being offered
Monthly view is best viewed using a larger monitor with desktop/laptop. To change view look for Scheduler, Day, ... Month ... Agenda, List in upper right corner of screen and click on appropriate view
If using cell, mobile or smart phone change view to List, Day or Agenda view using button with the down arrow in upper right corner of screen

Bits & bobs about paper/books/tips/trips/etc.
I follow Trish Witkowski at Foldfactory and thoroughly enjoy her chatting about the (usually) 60 second Fold of the Week (FOW) and especially her FOW t-shirt slogans (click here for the 541 and counting list). She also now providing free downloads for various folds which I really appreciate and also her How To Fold: youtube videos

Not sure why I forgot to list the SFCB workshop for Hedi Kyle's Franklin Fold and slipcases but here are some videos/instructions for you to check out. Frank book - simplified Franklin fold book by Cathryn Miller (see next paragraph). In Hedi's Book, Art of the Fold - instructions are on page 96. Videos of slipcases by Peter Baumgartner, Paula Beardell Krieg and DAS Bookbinding
I am a fan of Cathryn Miller of Byopia Press. Her recent blogs talk about a "pocket" book where the structure can be expanded to accommodate more pages. Here are Part One, Part Two and Part Three. She also has an exhibit - Square Dance at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery. Check out her Hedi's fantastic belt fold and also instructions for an alternate interlocked band closure
Another favorite book artist I follow is Gina Pisello. She was talking about the workshop she was taking with Helen Hibert (yet another favorite) in an SDBA monthly meeting and showed what I thought was a cool, amazing, adaptable and expandable book to hold her paper weavings which she shared on her blog.
Nice segue into a paper weaving demo with Helen Hiebert put on by Vintage Page Designs. Also a woven paper heart valentine. The Paper Year will open again for monthly subscriptions on April 1st. Also Helen's podcast with Paula Beardell Krieg (I just adore cross pollination, don't you?)

Centralized area for hundreds of opportunities for artists - mostly residencies, some grant funding & galleries compiled by one person to encourage community. International, but with a US-lens. Assembled and maintained by Everest Pipkin - from US so it leans that way. You can also help by sending opportunities to add - see how to in spreadsheet.
Residencies in many different mediums. See if one of these fit you.
