When the town of Lahaina was ravaged by fire in early August 2023 I was trying to figure out how to help out. In doing my research I came across a list of local businesses on the Hawaiian islands that would be donating a portion of their sales towards helping out the fire victims. People were being told to stay away from Lahaina but many thought it meant staying away from Maui altogether. So I decided to select a business on Maui to not only support a local business but they would be right there to help out. I ended up getting a subscription to have 2 Maui Gold pineapples delivered to me every 3 months. Not only is the pineapple a symbol of hospitality (ho'okipa) on the islands but you can tell it spent every moment (18 - 32 months) gathering sunshine so that we could smell the sweetness and enjoy the beautiful yellow succulent flesh within. Can you tell I love pineapple? I loved it so much that we had to share our first shipment with neighbors, friends and family. Anything leftover was cut up, placed in ziploc bags and frozen. My brothers had a birthday about a month ago. Guess what they got? You guessed it! They ended up getting way more than I expected (I paid for a certain number of pounds) but it was all good. It is a part of my evil plan to get people to proclaim "that is the best pineapple I have ever had in my life!" and to bind them in mouthwatering deliciousness to the trapped sunshine that is Maui Gold pineapples. By the way did you know that as you eat pineapple it is also trying to digest you? It contains a mixture of enzymes called bromelain that digests proteins. That is why your mouth tingles sometimes when you eat pineapple and everything tastes different after having eaten them. I have to admire a fruit that fights back! BTW did you know you can grow another pineapple from the crown of any pineapple?
In between a leak in the house, a car ABS brake recall, the holidays and wondering where the time went it is delightful to know that I have a new office chair (I love this chair - it has a foot rest easily tucked away, an easy to add/remove laptop desk and I can lean all the way back into a spine neutral position) and pineapples in my life at least once a quarter for as long as I am not tired. Being able to start my day by including pineapple in my fruit, nuts and yogurt is a very satisfying and scrumptious breakfast. How do you start your day?
I am hoping that you had/will have the holidays you want and that the upcoming trip around the sun will be filled with joy, laughter, good food, good friends and lots of creating, making and workshops!
See you next year!
