The Board Game Faith Newsletter, Issue 34
Hello, Board Game Faithful!
Kevin: Our big announcement! Board Game Faith is transitioning to Play Saves the World! We feel like it’s a natural next stage for the work we are doing; instead of looking for connections between board games and spirituality, we are advocating for building those connections and intersections between play and human flourishing.
Daniel: I’m so excited about this next chapter for Board Game Faith. Here’s a sneak peek at a couple of the logos we’re considering. What do you think? Please emails us your thoughts at boardgamefaith@gmail.com
Coming Up
Kevin: Ooh it’s a big ‘un, it’s Sam Macdonald of Garphill Games! Sam is a board game designer and has worked as a church pastor. So exciting to hear his thoughts on his life and work.
Daniel: Another happy point on the horizon coming up quickly is Geekway! Kevin and I will both be at this awesome gaming convention in the Saint Louis area May 16-19. If you’ll be there too, please let us know: boardgamefaith@gmail.com
Games We're All About Right Now
Kevin: I’m digging into The 7th Citadel. I backed it years ago, and it finally dropped, and with its arrival I was no longer very excited – delayed gratification and all. But now that it’s here and I’m starting to set it up, it’s pretty dope. I’ve also been playing Hegemony and John Company 2nd Edition. Pictured below: the asymmetrical Euro Hegemony.
Daniel: I’ve been trying a new approach to my participation in our church’s game night recently: instead of packing a huge bag of games, I’m just bringing one medium-weight game that I set up beforehand and then offer to teach to anyone as they show up. I’m enjoying it (maybe selfishly) because it allows me to bring a different game to focus on each week. It also works because our college minister, who leads the group, also has a huge wagon of other games available.
Spirituality
Kevin: If you’ve ever done yoga, the savasana/meditation moment is really nice. I wish we could introduce some of that to Christian pastoral prayers, where it’s a more meditative and listening moment instead of a talking moment. Along with those thoughts, I’ve picked up a tome of theology, Balthasar’s The Glory of the Lord; it’s dense but meditative to read a few pages at a time every night before bed.
Media We're Digging Right Now
Kevin: Late Night with the Devil is so much fun if you enjoy horror movies. What happens when a desperate late night talk show decides to stage a live exorcism before a studio audience? Answer: nothing good happens.
Daniel: Kristen and I both really enjoyed The Book of Clarence. Like The Life of Brian, it sorts of tells the story of Jesus from the perspective of a fictional character who is alive at the same time, and whose life somewhat parallels Christ’s. It is funny and well made, but also more reflective and devotional. It’s almost a love letter to Christ.
