The Board Game Faith Newsletter, Issue 2
Hello, Board Game Faithful!
Daniel: In our corner of the world, the trees are just beginning to display their autumn colors. There’s no need for nature to look this amazing–I can imagine leaves withering and falling off much less flamboyantly–but it does so anyway.
Games strike me in much the same way. I can imagine a life without games (shudder). And yet they exist anyway to make life fun and beautiful. Like scarlet and purple trees, games can remind us that life is unnecessarily amazing.
Kevin: Yeah, it’s crazy gorgeous here in NC with the leaves, and we had a night of frost 2 nights ago (a bit early for us). It warms up nicely in the afternoon and it’s hard not to be grateful for such a lovely world. I had not thought of connecting over the top fall colors with over the top games, but you are right, Tenacious Daniel! Unnecessary beauty is awesome.
Behind the Episodes
Kevin: We have tried some YouTube shorts using the Riverside capabilities, so check that out (Riverside.fm is a great service, BTW, give it a try through our referral if it meets a need of yours) As a middle-aged guy it definitely makes me feel old to get my head around some new technological styles. I did get a new microphone (the Shure MV7), and it’s got a nice rich sound over my prior microphone I think (if you don’t agree, please don’t tell me because now it’s too late, I already bought it).
Coming Up
In our next episode (17), we are thrilled to welcome Adrian Adamescu, the designer of such amazing games as Sagrada, Dice Theme Park, and many more. Adrian’s visit to Board Game Faith also marks the first of a new kind of occasional episode, in which we focus less on one particular theme, and more on one particular person’s story about games and faith. If you have any questions or comments for Adrian, please just leave them over on our Discord server, and we will try to include them as time allows.
Games We're All About Right Now
Kevin: I’ve been digging back into Raiders of Scythia (k-pow! A very explosive game when you complete a raid) and Hadrian’s Wall. HW has a solo campaign (available on their website) and I CANNOT DEFEAT FORT 9 AND IT’S KILLING ME. Also, Root is awesome, and I am excited to try it with some landmarks that I just purchased.
Daniel:
In a recent visit to my daughter’s college for her birthday, I stopped by the friendly local game store and was surprised to discover multiple copies of Flamecraft! I quickly snatched one up, brought it home, and have been enjoying it ever since.
After a month hiatus, it was really good to get back to our church board game group last night. One of our members brought the “Heart of Africa” map for Ticket to Ride–a board that was new to me. I really liked the experience: the competition for lines was much tighter, and a new “terrain” mechanism allowed for some extra points.
