The Board Game Faith Newsletter, Issue 3
Hello, Board Game Faithful!
Kevin: My feet are cold. I now wear slippers. This makes me feel old. Fortunately, under the gaming table, NO ONE NOTICES. I was looking forward to Halloween but it was rained and thunderstormed out and was a real letdown. Next year!
Behind the Episodes
Kevin: Last week’s episode with Adrian Adamescu was really cool. He is a genuinely interesting and thoughtful person. If he ever starts a board game and religion podcast you should listen to his instead of ours. For now, though, LISTEN TO US.
Daniel: Yeah, I loved getting to talk with Adrian. What a great human being. I’m excited to find out more about his upcoming game, Mistwind. Kevin also did a great job of bringing some of the silliest moments to YouTube as shorts!
Coming Up
We return to Book Optional Book Club with Reality is Broken chapters 10 and 13. We also just found out that McGonigal has a Buddhist background. So we definitely want to hear her comment on the crossover between Buddhism and games! We have a special episode with returning guest Ali Karar in December about Islam and Jesus (and board games).
Games We're All About Right Now
Kevin: I had a glorious weekend playing My Father’s Work with my 16-year old son. He is away at a boarding school so it was especially nice to have that time with him. We LAUGHED SO HARD. Robotic monkey butlers! War technology that is just guns strapped to various objects! The game is more goofy than straight up competitive, and that’s just how I like things. I want a winner, but I want it to have something more than just winning. Such as time travel! The humor here is spot on.
My copy of Circadians: Chaos Order is waiting at my FLGS and it looks awesome. I love anything Garphill Games does.
Daniel: Our weekly church board game group meets monthly at a coffee shop downtown to play with members of a local college campus ministry group, as well as another church. This past Wednesday we gave Concept a try (picture below), and it was a big hit! It’s one of those games where we don’t even keep score; just the experience of it is enough.
Media We're Digging Right Now
Kevin: I am trying to finish Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon but I think it stumbles a lot. They jump in time and I just don’t care as much about the new actors and plotlines. It’s still watchable, and I appreciate the experimentation, but meh. Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is so so good! It’s pretty gory, but it evokes the old Alfred Hitchcock Presents vibe, and I just love how it incorporates weird horror motifs in his work. I’ve also been listening to lots of Mark Knopfler, his Sailing to Philadelphia is such a wonderful album, and it includes Van Morrison and James Taylor!
Daniel: Ack! I’ve gotten back into video games! How did this happen? After many years of not touching a controller, I’ve started playing a couple really fun titles on the Nintendo Switch. But…here’s the catch…the games are like board games! First up is Dorfromantik, which is a tile placement, map-building game. It’s kind of like Carcossonne, but with infinite tiles! Kristen and I both love it. It’s super relaxing, almost meditative….and fun. But don’t just take my word for it. Check out this gorgeous trailer video. Can you resist it?!
Um, I Think It's Your Turn
If you haven’t had a chance to fill out our “It’s So Nice to Meet You” form, please take a moment or two to give it a try. Basically, we just want to get to know you better…we promise it’s not a secret marketing ploy. We already think you’re awesome; we just want to know the details on what makes you awesome!
